Garbage, Recycling & Other Waste Disposal

The Borough’s weekly collections and special disposal guidelines and events keep our community clean and healthy.

All trash must be placed in the trash bins to be collected – no items placed outside of the toter will be collected. To purchase a second trash container please contact Waste Management at 800-866-4460 and state “service change” to the automated system to be connected to a Representative.

Residents may place up to two (2) bulk items at the curb once a month. The collection of bulk waste shall be on the same day of your regular collection. The Borough’s designated bulk waste collection week is the 3RD FULL WEEK OF THE MONTH; (check the calendar below to specify dates). Additional trash bags are NOT permitted for bulk item collection. 

All recyclable materials can be mixed together and must be placed curbside in a recycling bin for curbside collection.

2026 Collection Calendar

Recyclable Items

  • Aluminum and Tin Cans
  • Plastics 1 and 2 ONLY
  • Paper and Cardboard – magazines, catalogs, telephone books, junk mail, envelopes, all color office paper, paper grocery bags, newspapers, and insert and cardboard boxes. Cardboard boxes must be flattened and cut in three-foot sections.
  • GLASS recycling is back beginning in 2024!

Non-Recyclable Items

  • Plastic bags
  • Shredded paper

A bulk container, e.g. a POD, dumpster or bagster, must be registered with the Borough prior to placing it. The following documents outline what constitutes a bulk container, appropriate use, and how to get one permitted.

Electronic Waste

Electronic waste (E-waste) cannot be disposed of in municipal landfills and so will not be collected as trash. E-waste includes:

  • Cell phones
  • Desktop and laptop computers
  • Computer monitors
  • Computer peripherals (e.g. mouse, keyboard, cables, etc.)
  • Printers
  • Television sets

These items must be recycled at an approved E-waste center. The local centers are: 

The Borough also hosts an annual Electronic Waste Disposal Event using a third-party, Noble Environmental Recycling.

Yard Waste

Waste Management does not provide curbside collection for yard waste. 

NEW LOCATION!

The Borough provides a dumpster from April 1 to October 31 at the Public Works Garage in the lower level of the Municipal Complex for residents to discard their yard waste for composting. 

Yard waste is defined as leaves, garden residue and tree trimmings, and similar material, including grass clippings; plant material and debris commonly thrown away in the course of maintaining yards and gardens such as branches, brush, flowers, roots and wood waste.

Yard waste does not include loose soils, sod, food waste including from gardens or orchards, food compost, plastics and synthetic fibers, lumber, wood or tree limbs over four (4) inches in diameter, animal excrement, or noxious weeds and soil contaminated with hazardous substances.

Hard to Dispose Item Collection

The Borough hosts two “Hard to Dispose of Items Days” each year, one in the spring and one in the fall, for items that Waste Management will not collect curbside. Proof of residency is required to drop off items and can include a state issued photo ID or utility bill to your current Whitehall address.

Bring your items to the Public Works building parking lot located off Route 51 in the municipal complex.

We will not accept:

  • E-waste
  • Paint, oil, or petroleum products
  • Batteries
  • Appliances containing CFCs (freon)
  • Chemicals
  • Engine or engine parts
  • Hazardous or infectious wastes
